what is a “consecration” and why through Mary?

The roots of Marian Consecration can be traced back to the early Church and the devotion to Mary that has been present since the beginning of Christianity. In fact, Jesus invented the concept of      Marian Consecration when he entrusted His mother, Mary, to His beloved disciple, John, while hanging from the cross:

"Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, 'Woman, behold, your son.' Then he said to the disciple, 'Behold, your mother.' And from that hour the disciple took her into his home." (John 19:25-27, RNAB)

Marian Consecration has been further developed and promoted by the teachings of the early church fathers and countless saints. Saints Louis de Montfort & Maximilian Kolbe are probably the most widely known for their impact and role in spreading devotion and consecration to Mary. Consecration to our Blessed Mother is a profound spiritual practice that invites us to entrust our souls, our bodies, all that we possess, and all of our eternal merits entirely to the loving care and intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, so that we may fully experience her loving guidance and protection. By consecrating ourselves to Jesus through Mary we become a beloved child of the Queen of Heaven, and are united more deeply to the heart of Christ and His Church. This beautiful practice of Marian Consecration offers a pathway to holiness, as Mary, our Mother and model of discipleship, leads us ever closer to the heart of her Son, who is the source of all grace and mercy.

"Mary's will does not differ from the Will of God, because she is perfectly united with Him. Thus, when we consecrate ourselves to Mary, we are actually consecrating ourselves to God, surrendering our will to His divine plan through the loving intercession of our Heavenly Mother.” - - Saint Maximilian Kolbe

How do I prepare for and make a Marian Consecration?

There are numerous books and formulas for Marian Consecration. We would recommend inviting your husband to join you, but if he’s not a willing participant just yet, grab a girlfriend or ten, and embark on a spiritual journey that will change your life forever. Below you’ll find the three most popular options …

The Saint Louise de Montfort Consecration is probably the most thorough and demanding option. He was a French priest and theologian, that popularized the practice of Marian Consecration in the 18th century. His approach emphasized total abandonment and surrender to Mary, viewing her as the quickest and most secure way to Jesus. His book, "True Devotion to Mary," outlines a 33-day preparation period culminating in a formal act of consecration to Mary.

The Kolbe Consecration further developed the concept of Marian Consecration in the 20th century. He emphasized the role of Mary as the Immaculate Conception and the perfect model of holiness. His book, "The Immaculate Conception: God's Masterpiece," explores the theological foundations of Marian Consecration and its profound impact on the spiritual life.

Perhaps the most popular consecration today, is Father Michael Gaitley’s “33 Days to Morning Glory,” which offers a modern and accessible approach to the practice, drawing from the writings of Louise de Montfort, Maximilian Kolbe, Saint Teresa of Calcutta, and Saint John Paul II. Father Gaitley's version of the 33-day preparation period includes reflections on the lives of these saints and their unique relationships with Mary. I would HIGHLY recommend this option because of the many resources for individuals and groups that it offers; the program offers print and digital versions of individual guides, leader guides, promotional parish resources, and amazing videos. This 33 day “retreat” is also set-up for busy parents, so the reading is not as extensive (2-3 pages a day) but rich in content and he asks you to ponder the ideas presented throughout the day.

Once you’ve consecrated yourself to Jesus through Mary, invite your children to consecrate themselves under your guidance. Giving the gift of Jesus through the Immaculate Heart of Mary to your children is the best, wisest, and most comforting gift you can give them and yourself. When you’ve consecrated your children to our Blessed Mother you can find peace and rest in knowing that she’s always protecting, guiding, and interceding for them; she makes up for what we lack as human mothers.
